Medium | $100,000-$150,000
Steph's Notes:
The Careers page is straightforward, run-of-the-mill tech company fare.
This seems like a somewhat hybrid role between standard Community work and Support work, which I always enjoy seeing. Given the duties, I do wish this were a more senior title, although the pay is great regardless.
Enthusiasm for building something new, coming up with new ideas, and working autonomously. You know how to engage communities and you have new ideas to bring to Medium that you’ll launch and oversee.
I like the way they phrased this – a thoughtful alternative to the lazy and boring "must work independently."
Proven ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
Man, we were so close to avoiding the standard job cliches!
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a product- and systems-thinking mindset.
You know what, this is also a nice break from the "high intelligence" bullshit I so often see in job descriptions. I know exactly what they're asking for and therefore can ascertain *why* they're asking for it.
Working with a fully distributed team: We’re totally remote and have teammates across the U.S. & France
Sing it with me: this is not a benefit!

Everyone has a story to tell. Medium is the place for stories to take shape and take flight. We believe that what you read and write matters, and we’re building a place that rewards depth, nuance, and time well spent over clicks and sensationalism. Over 100 million people connect and share their wisdom on Medium every month — and we’re growing! Our mission is to deepen our collective understanding of the world through the power of writing.
As the Community Manager, you'll serve as Medium's liaison to writers and editors by providing community support, distributing content, and fostering engagement. You will offer clear guidance and support to our writers and editors, collaborate with specific groups—for instance, the editors in the Boost Nomination Pilot program—and oversee our off-platform communities and social media. In collaboration with our product marketing team, you’ll organize events, webinars, and activities to engage and connect writers. You’ll communicate regularly with the community through emails and blog posts. You’ll also look at ways to use other tools, like Slack or Discord, to build out the Medium writer community. This will include outreach and recruitment for publication programs.
- Support and Clarity: Provide clear and timely support to writers, addressing their concerns and questions. Create resources and guides to help writers navigate our platform effectively. Address policy issues (and, on occasion, enforcement) with grace.
- Specific Communities: Work with distinct writer and editor communities, understanding their unique needs and providing tailored support and engagement.
- Social Media Management: Oversee our social media channels, creating and curating content that resonates with our writer community. Engage with writers on social platforms to build a strong online presence.
- Feedback Loop: Collect feedback from writers and communicate their needs and suggestions to the broader team. Collaborate with product and development teams to enhance the writer experience based on community insights.
